Machado de Castro, one of the greatest figures in European sculpture of the 18th century, is the author of the famous equestrian statue of D. José I in Terreiro do Paço, in Lisbon. The main house is distributed over two floors and has a mansard roof in the center. The façade is symmetrical, marked by pilasters that divide it into three parts. On one side, there is a gate dating from the 17th century, before the construction of the current house on the other, there is the private chapel, considered the property's ex-libris. Built by order of D. António Xavier de Cerveira e Sousa, commander of the Order of Christ, this chapel houses the remains of his wife, D. Maria José Pereira e Costa, who died in 1842.
