The municipality of Faro is divided into two distinct areas, the coast, located in the Ria Formosa Natural Park, and the barrocal, characterized by mountains and valleys, populated by typical Algarve vegetation.
The natural park is considered one of the seven natural wonders of Portugal, with a beach that is about 7 km from the city center. It includes the river and a lagoon system, interspersed with dunes, forming small islands and peninsulas, which protect a large area of mangroves, canals and islets. Faro's beaches are located on the Ancão peninsula and on Culatra island, next to the natural park corridor. The park is a rich and complex aquatic ecosystem, composed of barrier islands, marshes and channels, comprising sandy coasts that separate the waters of the Ria Formosa and the Atlantic Ocean.
