Property summary
Far from the madding crowd, this grand stone house offers the buyer a very rare opportunity for peace and a little magic, and is readily adaptable to a letting or B & B business or for creative processes.
Standing in perhaps the highest village in the Serra da Lousã, in which the other houses are occupied only seldom or not at all, it enjoys an exhilarating island-like sense of solitude, with pure air and spectacular, unending views across a large chunk of Portugal.
For all this, it’s barely a 16 km drive to the charming small town of Espinhal, which has food stores, cafés, a pharmacy, post office, doctor’s surgery, as well as one of Portugal’s highest vertical waterfalls (at 32m). From here there is easy access to a number of larger towns, including Coimbra, the regional capital and Portugal’s third city, very accessible by a new fast road through the valley.
In the other direction, a similarly short drive will take you to the pleasant little town of Castanheira de Pêra, also with day-to-day facilities, in an area noted for it’s warm, clear rivers and lakes (great for swimming), and lovely scenery.
The house was sympathetically restored not long ago from a group of farm buildings, the architect joining them together to make a grand design, retaining the superb exposed stone, characteristic of these hill villages.
Entry is by an enormous ‘baronial’ hall – one is reminded of a stately Scottish country house – off of which is an exceptionally large luxury bathroom; a bedroom considerably bigger than most sitting rooms, with veranda; downstairs to another large bedroom, and a smaller one (but still a double!), which could make a very nice study, or be converted to another bathroom to make an en-suite.
The low-ceiling snug is just what its name implies: warm and intimate, a cosy place to snuggle up in front of the satellite Tv.
The kitchen/diner is another huge space, modern and well equipped, but with that rustic farmhouse personality which can easily be lost in a renovation. You could almost hold a dance in the inglenook fireplace. Next to it is a walk-in store cupboard.
On the upper floor is a further double bedroom with an original wooden ceiling beam, and en-suite toilet.
Outside is a very large wrap-around terrace overlooking the forest and hills beyond. Steps lead down to another terrace, which has a substantial storage room, play room, spa bath and neat little garden.
Below this a fair-sized plot of flat land, very suitable for a swimming pool.
Mains electric. Water is from a mountain spring, which has never dried. Telephone line (not connected).
Quality furniture and fittings and outdoor hot tub included in the sale.
