POSITION
This spacious bungalow is situated in Pedrógão Pequeno, a sleepy, well-restored stone village not far from the Ic8 road, which runs from the seaside resort of Figueira da Foz towards the Spanish border. The mountain range of Serra de Estrela (to 2000 m, nature park, snow in winter), is about 100 km to the north. The cultural centres of the region are the ancient university town of Coimbra (with some of the country's best hospitals) and Castelo Branco.
Restoration
During 2006/7, the house was completely renovated. It was given a new roof (tiling and beams), new doors and double-glazed windows with security shutters, new bathrooms, new flooring and new plumbing. A stair was installed giving access to the attic.
DETAILS
The house was built in 1950 as part of a high quality architectural project to house the Cabril Dam managers, engineers and maintenance staff. It is built on a hillside high over the River Zézere, in a descending line of 7 villas.
The main door (middle, front view) opens into the main hall, with the living room (fireplace, access to front veranda) on the left. Beyond, also on the left, is a second hall giving access to the small bedroom (en-suite bathroom), kitchen (utility recess, access to attic) and dining room.
Opposite the main door is a large built-in cupboard.
On the right is the central corridor with access to the main bathroom and 3 ample bedrooms - left, right and straight ahead (access to rear veranda from the last).
The woodwork throughout is beech (interior doors) and pine (floors). The windows are double-glazed. The 6 main rooms and halls/corridor have resplendent new and uniform parquet flooring throughout.
The bathrooms have a shower, hand-basin, bidet and toilet; non-slip floor-tiling. The kitchen has fitted cupboards and a sink unit in beech, to match the rest of the woodwork.
The plot is 820 m2. Included in the original design, the gardens are landscaped with a raised terrace (covered with a pergola), flower beds and area for fruit trees (tangerine, orange, plum and khaki). Below the garden, far below, runs the river Zézere, into which the Ribeira de Pêra flows, between the towering rock faces opposite.
The house is within view or earshot of a church at each point of the compass. Three of them ring out the hour, in leisurely succession (though, fortunately, not all day every day).
Access for the less mobile: at the moment there are two steps without a ramp (easily installed).
Things To See In The Area
One of the district’s summer glories are the "river beaches". They provide cafés and places to sunbathe; the water quality is controlled.
The region is one of great natural beauty, with forests, hills, rivers and valleys in every direction. The reservoirs created using the deep valleys of the Zézere stretch for a distance of 150 km, along which runs the Zézere long-distance path. There is a long list of places to visit – the Geopark Naturtejo, Serra da Estrela, and Castanheira aquapark, to name but a few.
