The history of the estate is 2 thousand years old. In the times of the Roman Empire, there was a villa of a Roman aristocrat here. The current Baroque quinta, which is 300 years old, has preserved the original stone walls and room layout. Around the house, more remains from Roman times have been preserved: a cistern, a bridge, a massive column and fragments of farm buildings. In the Middle Ages, it was first hosted by the Knights Templar (it is one of several dozen places in Europe indicated as a potential place to hide their legendary treasure) and then by the Knights Hospitallers, also known as the Hospitallers or - more recently - the Knights of Malta. One of the inhabitants of Romeiras at that time was the later king of Portugal, Dom Antonio do Crato.
Completely fenced, 170 hectares of picturesque land, which consists of a 30 ha olive grove giving excellent quality oil, a 1.5 ha vineyard where excellent wine is made, over 100 hectares of mountain pastures with several thousand cork oaks, which makes the whole area look like a gigantic English landscape park. The picture is complemented by 4 stocked ponds, a lake with crystal clear water, as well as a river and several seasonal streams, creating beautifully murmuring cascades in winter and spring.
The buildings consist of a manor house with an area of about 250m2 (5 bedrooms, library, living room, kitchen, dining room and chapel with a perfectly preserved beautiful baroque décor), gardener's house, manager's house and several other residential buildings giving a total of 14 additional bedrooms. Each of the houses also has a kitchen and a living/dining room. Most of the rooms have their own bathrooms. All of them have recently undergone a general renovation, are furnished and serve as agritourism.
The buildings have a total area of almost 1000m2, not counting the farm buildings which consist of garages, stables, sheepfold and others.
Located in the centre of the property, the main residential building (quinta) is surrounded by a 7.5 ha garden surrounded by a stone wall over 3 m high and leads to it through a representative vaulted gate. In the garden there are two richly decorated baroque swimming pools that once served as an economic one. The third pool is located on the top of a hill near agritourism buildings and offers a spectacular view of several kilometers around.
The farm is located at the foot of the extremely picturesque and nature reserve Serra de Sao Mamede mountains, 170 km from Lisbon and only 30 km from the border with Spain. In the vicinity there are many emblematic places for Portugal, such as Marvao (considered the second most attractive small town in the country) and Castelo de Vide, called "Sintra Alentejo". The region is famous for its sensational food and delicious wines, as well as... Festivals. In the immediate vicinity there are as many as 8 music festivals every year with the participation of world stars - from classical music (Marvao Festival) through jazz (Portalegre Jazz Festival) to pop, rock (festival do Crato) and trance electronics (Waking Life Festival).
Herdade is not only a beautiful estate, but also a well-functioning enterprise. The source of income is not only the production of wine and oil, but also the breeding of Sallers cows and sheep. And also the already mentioned agritourism. It is also a private hunting district rich in game (wild boars, deer, foxes, badgers, numerous species of birds).
The nearest neighbor is about 2 km away, the nearest town about 5 km. A larger resort with shopping malls, a cinema, and more restaurants is 18 km away. In the area, most of the land is occupied by similar large historical estates, often in the hands of the same families since the Middle Ages.
