Chimneys, whitewashed walls, Moorish influence… some architectural features are unique to the Algarve! Here are the main ones:
The Algarve Chimney
Forget azulejos; in the Algarve, the chimney remains the most emblematic symbol of local architecture. In the rural houses of the hinterland, one can still admire the technical skill of this symbol of folk art, once an indicator of the owner’s wealth. Ornate, lacy, colorful, with varied geometric shapes and an undeniable Moorish influence, no two chimneys were identical, and the more elaborate the design, the more expensive its construction!
Whitewashed Walls
In southern Portugal, it is very common to encounter houses with whitewashed walls, simple and undecorated or adorned with yellow or blue doors and windows. These rural houses are often built with mud or stone masonry and are frequently found in areas like Serra do Caldeirão.
The Platband
In addition to the chimney, the platband is also part of the Algarve’s architectural heritage. It is an elegant decorative band with geometric and colorful shapes that adorns the edges of facades and the borders of roof terraces (which we will discuss next). The band is generally matched to the colored bars that frame the doors and windows, contrasting with the whitewash of the walls.
The Açoteias
Houses near the Atlantic coast often include flat roof terraces, called açoteias, originally used for drying fish and fruits. These flat roofs are inspired by Moorish architecture, particularly Moroccan, with simple, straight lines. The most emblematic example is the town of Olhão, even nicknamed the cubist city!

The Quintas
Quintas are farms or large traditional country houses that can be renovated to offer modern comfort while retaining their rustic charm. They are often made of stone, with thick walls that protect from heat and cold, and equipped with chimneys and bread ovens. The outdoor spaces are vast, often featuring orchards or even olive groves!
Fishermen’s Houses
Typical of coastal areas and former fishing villages, these houses are often small and colorful, with simple facades and wooden doors. Their main advantage: their proximity to the sea!
Houses with Patios
Inspired by Moorish architecture, these houses are built like a riad: the buildings form a square with a cool, shaded inner courtyard, perfect for summer! It is a very common architectural style in Portugal!
The Palacetes
Palacetes, palaces, or mansions are large palatial-style residences, often built in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Imposing, they stand out with their ornate facades, sometimes even adorned with colorful azulejos, and their decorative details such as ornaments, columns, or moldings! Prestige homes, they come with large private gardens, not easy to maintain but very pleasant to admire!
